Lighting Ordinance Goes Back to Malibu City Council

The city of Malibu is considering a lighting ordinance that includes incorporating an evening curfew for exterior residential and commercial lighting.

The Malibu City Council is expected to take the next step in bringing about a citywide lighting ordinance at its meeting in July.

The council will review recommendations  pertaining to a citywide dark sky lighting ordinance; consider authorizing a request for proposals and funding for a consultant to assist staff in preparing the ordinance; and authorize city staff to solicit proposals.

The recommendations provided by the Zoning Ordinance Revisions and Code Enforcement Subcommittee (ZORACES) include working with Caltrans to reduce and shield street lighting along Pacific Coast Highway and Southern California Edison to consider reductions in exterior lighting throughout the city.

The recommendations also include incorporating an evening curfew for exterior residential and commercial lighting.

The city has already appropriated $25,000 for the development of the ordinance.

The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 8 at Malibu City Hall.
