Live Blog: Day 2 of Council Nomination Period

Three people pull papers to begin the election process.

5 p.m. I have uploaded the video interview with Wagner. The nomination period has ended for today.

To review, Joan House, "Malibu" Hamish "The Illusion" Patterson and Council member Jefferson "Zuma Jay" Wagner pulled papers today. All three said they plan to run. Council member John Sibert said he would make his decision by the end of the week. Former Planning Commissioner John Mazza said he has not made a decision and does not have timeline for when he would make one.

3:30 p.m. Jefferson "Zuma Jay" Wagner says he will run for a second term. He wants to be on the City Council for another four years to get a viewshed ordinance passed and to get a city beach. I have a brief video interview that I will post shortly.

2:07 p.m. The video of Hamish is up.

1:31 p.m. "Malibu" Hamish Patterson, aka "The Illusion" said he will run. He said his involvement in the effort to get a new skate park for the city has been an eye opener on how much is involved in city politics.

"I can either sit back and complain about the direction the city is going or get involved … I think the city needs someone who is in the meat of the city," said Patterson, who said he has lived in Malibu "on and off" since 1986.

I have a brief video with the interview that I will post shortly.

1:25 p.m. I just spoke with Council member John Sibert and Planning Commissioner John Mazza, who ran unsuccessfully for council in 2004, 2006 and 2010.

Sibert said he has not made a decision on whether he will run (he did submit a "Declaration of Intent to Solicit and Receive Contributions" last month to city). He said he should have a decision by the end of the week.

Mazza said he has had not made a decision, nor does he have a timeline.

12:45 p.m. Malibu Hamish, who also goes by "The Illusion" and has many videos posted on YouTube, is meeting with City Clerk Lisa Pope about pulling papers. He is a leader among the skateboard enthusiasts seeking . Hamish said he would speak with me after the meeting. I'll ask him some questions, including what his last name is.

12 p.m. Jefferson "Zuma Jay" Wagner was quickly running out of City Hall to meet with some scientists at Cal State Northridge at the . I asked him if he would be pulling papers today. He said he would do it in a couple hours, and agreed to speak with me at that time.

11:50 a.m. I just spoke with Joan House on the phone. Regarding her run for council, she said, "I felt that there were some things before I left [the council in 2004 when she decided not to run for re-election] that I'd like to see happen or get done. And the opportunity is now that I can do it."

House, who served on the council from 1992 to 2004, said she would like to see the Michael Landon Center at Bluffs Park raised to make a "nice teen center," for the city to acquire a shuttle that can "reduce our carbon imprint and allow kids, seniors and whomever to ride a shuttle to get around Malibu," for the city to host meetings with outside public agencies rather than Malibu officials going elsewhere to these meetings and to expand Malibu's public relations. She said she has many more ideas.

Council members in Malibu are limited to two terms, but all terms served prior to when voters approved the law in 2000 do not apply. So House is eligible to serve one more term. Regarding whether this is violating the spirit of the law, House said, "I think we'll let the people decide in the election."

Regarding her philosophy on term limits, she said, "I do believe that people have the opportunity always to vote people out of office ... philosophically I would rather have the opportunity to vote a person in or out."

She said she has not endorsed anybody in this election, but plans to do it.

I will have a transcript of the full interview in a separate piece later today.

10:25 a.m. The two incumbents—John Sibert and Jefferson "Zuma Jay" Wagner—have entered the building ... for a meeting on city business. I did not ask the big question, but they will not be leaving without answering it. Stay tuned.

9:45 a.m. House said she has to go to the meeting, and could not stick around for an interview with Malibu Patch. She promised to answer questions on the phone later today.

9:25 a.m. Former Mayor Joan House has arrived. She says she has another meeting at 9:45 a.m., so if she cannot stick around for an interview after her visit to the City Clerk's Office, I'll speak with her later today.

8:55 a.m. Ed Gillespie, former Chamber of Commerce president and council candidate in 2006 and 2010, entered City Hall. He smiled, and said, "No, I'm not running." Gillespie said he was on his way to the dentist (I wonder if it's Malibu Patch blogger ), but wanted to stop by to see if I was actually here. I am!

8:45 a.m. It is busy at City Hall today; lots of people at the Planning Department's Public Counter, but so far nobody has stopped by to pull papers for a potential City Council run. I received an email yesterday that a potential candidate expects to arrive at about 9:15 a.m.
