MALIBU, CA — Malibu City Council on Monday returned to City Hall for an in-person meeting, only to promptly return to virtual meetings for the foreseeable future.

Malibu City Council on April 25 reversed their earlier decision and voted to keep council meetings online considering the recent spread of BA.2, a contagious Omicron subvariant. Just weeks before, the council voted to move council and commission meetings back in person as public health data indicated it was safe at the time, according to the city.

Regardless, the council decided to keep Monday's meeting in person given it had already been publicly noticed as such.

"It is great to see people when they're speaking ... it adds an element of humanity to the voice so it's great to see," Mayor Pro Tem Bruce Silverstein said.

The council took up a variety of issues including a proposed impound yard near the intersection of state Route 1, the Pacific Coast Highway, and Heathercliff Road. The details of the impound yard have become misunderstood by the Malibu community, Councilmember Karen Farrer said. The yard will only keep cars in the daytime on weekend days in the summer, she said.

Five members of the public spoke on the issue, which ultimately passed with four votes. Silverstein voted against the yard siting community opposition.

City Council considered two proposed single-family residences at 33386 and 33398 Pacific Coast Highway with many public commenters speaking in opposition of the potential development.

City council awarded Oscar Mondragón for his service to the Malibu community as a leader with the Malibu Community Labor Exchange. Mondragón worked under Cesar Chavez's leadership in the 1960s as part of the United Farm Workers labor union, Mayor Paul Grisanti said at Monday's meeting.
