Mayor Outlines City's Opposition to Lagoon Project in Letter

The letter states that the city voted to oppose the project because of "the clear disregard of the city's written concerns about the project and its potential impact on water quality and the environment."

Malibu's mayor sent a letter this week to Gov. Jerry Brown outlining the city's opposition to the Malibu Lagoon restoration Project.

The Malibu City Council on April 9 to oppose the project in its current form, and authorized the USGS (United States Geological Survey) to provide an independent scientific review of all the technical documents of the Lagoon project. The city also agreed to file an amicus brief.

In the letter, Mayor Laura Zahn Rosenthal asked the governor to put the project "on a permanent hold until State Parks has adequately addressed all of our concerns and until we have been able to secure an independent review from the
USGS on the project."

Rosenthal said the opposition vote was made because of the disregard of Malibu's written concerns about the project and its potential impact on water quality and the environment.

"In addition, numerous project management concerns of the Malibu community have been ignored by the lead agencies, leading to mistrust and anger over this project," the mayor wrote.
