Malibu High School Principal Mark Kelly Leaving for District Position

A new principal will be selected for the 2012-13 school year.

Malibu High School will be losing its long-time principal because of a new appointment within the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.

Mark Kelly, who has served as principal of since 2004, was appointed Thursday as the new Director of Student Services, according to Sarah Wahrenbrock, assistant to the superintendent.

Kelly's new position goes into effect on July 1, and his job will be posted online, according to the district.

"The district and community stakeholders will be involved in the process of selecting a new principal for the 2012-13 school year," Wahrenbrock said.

Kelly was well known on campus for promoting the development of student leadership through student organizations, she said.

Before coming to Malibu High School, Kelly served as the assistant principal at Santa Monica High School. He also taught educational leadership workshops at UCLA and Cal State Northridge, facilitated curriculum workshops at the Los Angeles Systemic Initiative.

He also taught math at North Hollywood High School, Richard E. Byrd Junior High School and Francisco Sepulveda Junior High School.
