UPDATE: Bird Causes Outage to 3,000 in Malibu

More than 3,000 Southern California Edison customers lost power Wednesday in Western Malibu after a bird flew into power lines.

The outage began about 1 p.m. and impacted 3,152 customers along Pacific Coast Highway between Heathercliff and Latigo Canyon roads, according to Southern California Edison spokeswoman Nancy Rodriguez Casanova.

Power was restored just before 2 p.m., she said.

The outage was caused by a bird that flew into the power lines, according to Rodriguez Casanova.

"Sometimes anything that comes into contact with power-lines can cause an outage. It can be loose debris, it can be a kite, tree branch and this time it was a bird," she said.

Jenni Ogden Klein wrote on Malibu Patch's Facebook page that the bird struck the power lines near her home on Dume Drive.

Ogden Klein said she was rushing out the door to find a place with power and Internet when she found "an electrified bird on the front lawn."

"Hmmm... guess we know why the power was out! Poor bird. But, why can one bird blow out the power for the whole area?" Ogden Klein wrote.
