Khankhanian, 28, is charged with second-degree murder. He killed Emily on April 3, 2010 when his vehicle struck her while she stood on the shoulder of Pacific Coast Highway near the Heathercliff Road intersection. If convicted of murder, Khankhanian would receive a mandatory prison sentence of 15 years to life.
The jury also has the option to convict Khankhanian of involuntary manslaughter. This would call for a maximum sentence of four years. All 12 jurors must determine Khankhanian is not guilty of murder before they can consider the manslaughter option.
