Point Dume Students Promote Recycling Awareness

Malibu Mayor Lou La Monte has declared Nov. 15 as "America Recycles Day" in Malibu.

Malibu Mayor Lou La Monte has declared Nov. 15, 2012 as America Recycles Day in Malibu, as part of a national call to action to focus on waste reduction, composting, the reuse of products and materials and purchasing recycled products.

The declaration was made at the council's Tuesday, Nov. 13 meeting and presented to students of Point Dume Marine Science Elementary School, which has a student compost club and other green programs.

A dozen students and the school's principal were on hand for the ceremony.

"Recycling is a very important part of what we do at our school," student Henry Mason said.

Faith Hernandez, who is also a student, said she enjoys feeding food waste to worms on campus.

"We recycle bottles cans and paper in all of our classrooms," Hernandez said.

The city will host two recycling events at Malibu City Hall, 23825 Stuart Ranch Road, according to Olivia Damavandi, the city's spokesperson.

A shredding event will take place Thursday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The public is invited to bring documents to be shredded and recycled at no cost, Damavandi said.

A Household Battery Recycling event will take place from Nov. 15 through Nov. 30. The City will collect batteries in the Senior Center and in the reception area during regular business hours, according to Damavandi.

She said nearly 900 tons of bottles, cans, paper, and electronic waste were recycled last year in Malibu.
