MALIBU, CA — The city is planning to install two roundabouts on Pacific Coast Highway as part of an increased effort to enhance safety on the road.

The proposal calls for the construction of two roundabouts — one at El Matador Beach Road and another at Encinal Canyon Road. They're labeled "quick-build" projects that "aim to calm traffic, improve pedestrian safety, and add dedicated bike lanes to help assess the feasibility of permanent roundabouts," according to Caltrans.

The roundabouts would each be a single lane: PCH would transition from two travel lanes down to one when entering the roundabout, then transition back to two travel lanes when exiting the roundabout.

The 2015 PCH Safety Study identified El Matador State Beach as having vehicle and pedestrian conflicts; the roundabout would help reduce traffic speeds and increase pedestrian safety in the area, according to city officials.

The study also recommended the installation of a roundabout at Encinal Canyon Road, which connects PCH to Highway 23 and Mulholland Highway.
