School Plans to Use Breathalyzer on Students at Homecoming Dance on Malibu Pier

Students will be rocking out this Saturday at the Malibu High School Homecoming Dance at the Malibu Pier, but before the party begins, some will be asked to submit to a breathalyzer test.

Students will be driving on Pacific Coast Highway to get to the dance at the Malibu Pier, and school officials want to make sure everyone is safe and sober, according to MHS Principal Jerry Block. 

"Our expectations are that all students will be sober upon arriving at the dance and that they will not bring any illegal substances or paraphernalia with them," Block said in an email to parents. "We will be searching all students' bags upon entry. This practice is standard when we are guests at a private venue such as the pier." 

Apparently some parents were concerned about the test, which is standard at most high school dances. Block said that not all students will be asked to undergo a breathalyzer. 

According to Block: "If we were to find anything illegal (e.g. alcohol) in a student's possession or if a student were acting as if he/she were under the influence of a substance, then we will respond as we do when students violate school/district rules such as the Controlled Substance Policy."  

The Malibu High School homecoming football game is set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 at Malibu High School against the Ribet Academy.
