Sheriff's Dept. Warns of Wire Scam

Malibu residents have lost approximately $20,000 in the past two days due to the scam, according to the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station.

The Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station is warning Malibu residents not to be fooled by a wire scam in which people are convinced to send money to help grandchildren that callers claim are in a foreign jail.

Malibu residents have lost approximately $20,000 due to the scam in the past two days, Sgt. Phil Brooks wrote in an email to Malibu Patch on Thursday.

In this scam, a person receives a phone call claiming money needs to be wired because the person's grandchild is in jail in a foreign country. The jail story is not true.

Anybody who receives a suspicious call that appears to be part of this scam should contact the sheriff's station at 310-456-6652.
