SR 23 Partially Closed In Malibu After Rock Slide

A section of southbound SR 23 will remain closed for another week after a landslide sent debris tumbling from a steep slope this month.

MALIBU, CA — A portion of a thoroughfare in Malibu will be closed for another week as CalTrans works to clear the roadway of debris after a landslide earlier this month, authorities said Thursday.

Northbound and southbound of SR 23 will remain closed from Pacific Coast Highway to Lechusa Road and Encinal Canyon road at least through the evening of Oct. 28, CalTrans reported.

The roadway has been closed since Oct. 14 as rock scalars and workers using a manliest, a front loader and large dump trucks worked to remove loose rocks, boulders and dirt from the slope.

CalTrans plans to install anchors for a large mesh that will prevent future slides from shuttering the road.

"The work requires extensive manual labor from rock scalers hanging from the slope by ropes and workers in a manlift," Caltrans said. "A trade will also be utilized for the installation of the mesh. It is necessary to keep the roadway closed to maintain a safe work area and for the protection of the driving public."

Residents with identification who live within the closed area will have access to their homes through the north end of the closure as far as lower Decker Edison Road, officials said.

The impact to the driving general public is expected to be minimal.

On the morning of Oct. 11, a rockslide sent debris tumbling from a steep slope at Post Mile 1.5 on the route.
