The Unknown Surfer Arrives at Legacy Park
The bronze statue was given to Malibu in honor of Surfrider Beach's designation as the first World Surfing Reserve.
Next time you visit , be sure to say hello to a young surfer with beautiful bronze skin. The 1,350 pound statue that one city official dubbed "The Unknown Surfer" was installed in the park last week. It is located behind the in a spot where several of the park's paths converge.
City Council member Jefferson "Zuma Jay" Wagner said, "The statue's first visitor was an egret that perched on his head."
Designed by former Santa Monica College arts instructor Jody Westheimer, the surfer stands six feet tall and holds an 8-foot-2-inch surfboard. Westheimer recently completed his doctorate at UC Santa Barbara.

The bronze statue was dedicated to Malibu in honor of last year's designation of as the first World Surfing Reserve. A plaque in front of the statue features information about the dedication and a quote from an unknown person about Surfrider Beach:
"I turn my back to the black asphalt strip that brought me here, then I look out over the big blue adventure that lies ahead."
