Two-Hour Parking in the Works for Cross Creek Road
The plan, which still needs final approval from the Malibu City Council, hopes to open up prime on-street parking for shoppers in the Civic Center area.

The Malibu City Council took the first step on Tuesday in bringing two-hour limited parking to Cross Creek Road.
In a 4-0 vote, with Councilmember Skylar Peak absent, the council agreed to direct city staff to check with the California Coastal Commission (CCC) about the restriction, notify nearby businesses and bring back a resolution implementing the limited parking.
The Coastal Commission's input is needed because Malibu's Local Coastal Program keeps the city from restricting any parking that would impede or restrict public access to beaches, trails or parklands, according to Malibu's Public Works Director Robert Brager.

The restrictions would impact 29 stalls on Cross Creek Road between Pacific Coast Highway and Civic Center Way, Brager said. The cost of installing 10, two-hour parking signs will be $2,500.
"The city currently allows unrestricted parking along Cross Creek Road," Brager said in a council agenda report. "As a result, many of the parking spaces appear to be occupied by employees of the local businesses or visitors to the region. With minimal parking turnover, patrons of the Civic Center area businesses are hindered from using prime on-street parking."

City Manager Jim Thorsen asked if city staff could come back in the six months after the parking is implemented to gauge its effectiveness.
