What's the Secret to Award Winning Chili?

The Malibu Kiwanis Chili Cook-Off, a Malibu tradition, continues through Monday in the Civic Center Area, and will also include live music, rides, games, gourmet food and local vendors.

At least 10 contestants will put their culinary skills to the test at the Malibu Kiwanis Chili Cook-Off this weekend.

The contest takes place Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. A five-judge panel will select the winner based on whose concoction is sampled the most by event attendees.

"The more they taste, that determines the winner," said John Paola, Kiwanis president and chair of the event.

"My chili is very different. The flavors are very, very different. They are all combined together. They all compliment each other," said Alex Rylance, a member of the club and a Malibu resident.

Rylance said his team carefully considers the process of cooking the meat and the vegetables.

"There is an art to the madness," Rylance said.

The festival will also feature live music, carnival rides and vendors.
