2024 Election Results In Manhattan Beach: Local Measures, City Council

There are plenty of key races underway in Manhattan Beach this 2024 General Election season.

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — Manhattan Beach voters headed to the polls to vote in the 2024 General Election and preliminary results are in for local measures, City Council, Treasurer and California State Assembly Member.

City Council

Three Manhattan Beach City Council seats were up for grabs with six candidates running for a spot.

As of 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the top three candidates in the race were Joe Franklin, Nina Tarnay and Steve Charelian. Franklin secured just under 26 percent of the vote, or 8,808 votes. Votes for Tarnay made up almost 22 percent of the vote, or 7,364 votes. Charelian secured over 17 percent of the vote, or 5,910 votes.

The remaining three candidates included Karen Komatinsky, Joe Marcy and Brenda O'Leary. Votes for Komatinsky made up almost 16 percent of the vote, or 5,351 votes. Almost 10 percent of Manhattan Beach residents, 3,337 people, voted for Marcy. O'Leary followed close behind with over 9 percent of the vote, 3,126 votes.

Local Measures

Manhattan Beach residents also weighed in on Mearure RLS, Measure MMB and Measure BC.

Measure RLS is a $200 million bond that aims to fund necessary upgrades to facilities at local schools without increasing tax rates. As of 2:30 p.m., voters favored passing Measure RLS, with 65 percent of the vote in favor and 35 percent of the vote against, according to preliminary results.

If approved, Measure MMB would increase the local sales tax rate by one-half cent to provide necessary local funding for city services. As of 2:30 p.m., voters favored passing Measure MMB,
with 56 percent of the vote in favor and 44 percent of the vote against, according to preliminary results.

Measure BC sought to authorize a $30 million Beach Cities Health Care District Bond Measure to cover construction improvements on BCHD facilities. As of 2:30 p.m., voters in the Beach Cities were against passing Measure BC, with 53 percent of the vote in against and 47 percent of the vote in favor, according to preliminary results.

Treasurer

Only one candidate, Tim Lilligren, ran for Manhattan Beach City Treasurer. Lilligren will take the office and will serve a four-year term.

Member of the California State Assembly, 66th District

Locally, voters in Assembly District 66, which includes Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, Gardena, Torrance and the Palos Verdes Peninsula cities voted for two candidates. Voters chose between current Democratic Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi and Republican small business owner George Barks.

As of 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Muratsuchi led the vote by a large margin with over 58 percent of the vote, or 94,753 total votes. Barks followed behind with more than 41 percent of the vote, or 67,819 votes.
