MANHATTAN BEACH POWERED BY 100 PERCENT GREEN, RENEWABLE ENERGY
MANHATTAN BEACH POWERED BY 100 PERCENT GREEN, RENEWABLE ENERGY
Manhattan Beach, CA (October 5, 2021) – Homes and businesses in Manhattan Beach will transition to 100% clean, renewable energy produced by sources like the sun and wind beginning October 9, 2021. California cities, like Manhattan Beach, are tackling the climate crisis by finding ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) to become carbon neutral by 2035. The change from 50% to 100% renewable energy follows a 2020 vote by Manhattan Beach City Council to change the City’s default renewable energy rate with the city’s electricity provider, Clean Power Alliance.
Manhattan Beach, CA (October 5, 2021)
“Transitioning the City’s electricity to 100% renewable, clean energy is one of the most impactful and immediate steps we can take to combat climate change,” said Mayor Hildy Stern. “This further aligns the City with statewide climate goals and recognizes the City’s commitment to the Climate Ready MB program and our investment in the environment.”
Collectively, the change to 100% Green Power will reduce 36,603 metric tons of GHGs annually, which is the equivalent of planting 603,947 trees or taking 7,942 cars off the road every year.
The result of the change to 100% renewable energy will increase a typical electricity bill for residents and small businesses by approximately 2.5-3% for electricity generation or about $4-5 per month. However, power customers have multiple options to reduce their bill through customer assistance options and clean energy choices found at www.cleanpoweralliance.org/CPAbillhelp.
“Manhattan Beach is leading the way to a clean energy future in going to 100% Green Power,” said Mayor Hildy Stern. “While the city has changed the default rate, the power of choice still resides with families and business owners.”
Clean Power Alliance (CPA) began operations in 2017, with Manhattan Beach joining in December 2017. Since then, the agency has grown to serve over three million people and provide more 100% Green Energy than any other electricity provider in the country. CPA is a non-profit governed by representatives from the 30 cities and two counties the agency serves. CPA invests revenue back into the community through scholarships and programs that offer incentives for reduced energy usage, as well as programs that offer customer assistance.
