Deadline Extended For Bruce's Beach Sculptural Artwork Submissions
City officials are looking to commission an original, site-specific sculptural artwork to honor the history and legacy of Bruce's Beach.

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — Those still looking to submit their original sculptural artwork to be displayed at Bruce's Beach Park are in luck as the city extended the submission deadline until the end of June.
City officials are looking to commission an original, site-specific sculptural artwork to honor the history and legacy of the Bruce's Beach neighborhood. The neighborhood was once a thriving fixture for the Black community before it was targeted by a racially motivated eminent domain action committed by the city in the 1920s.
"The artwork should evoke a sense of peace, healing, and community, and offer an educational opportunity for visitors to learn about the history of this area," city officials said.

When the deadline closes, city officials will begin the selection process between the artworks included. The artwork will sit alongside a recently installed plaque that commemorates the storied history of the area.
The updated plaque condemns the past actions of government officials and white residents who the city said, "intimidated, harassed, and demonstrated discrimination against Black homeowners and visitors."
