Lawmakers Tweet On Situation At US Capitol, Manhattan Beach
Congressman Ted Lieu has one take, Republicans another. Here are tweets on what politicians and other leaders think of today's takeover.
MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — Congressman Ted Lieu [D] is asking for Vice President Mike Pence to begin the 25th Amendment process in light of a swarm of President Trump supporters who blasted past security at the United States Capitol today wreaking havoc, breaking windows into the Capitol, and invading office spaces and the floor of Congress as Congress began to certify the electoral college and officially announce President-Elect Joe Biden as the next president of the United States.
The 25th Amendment allows the vice president, together with a "majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide", to declare the president "unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office" in a written declaration.
While Republican leaders such as Vice President Mike Pence and Representative Mike McCarthy were loathe to condemn the actions of the protesters, they did ask them to remain peaceful, something that did not happen.

Thank you to Capitol Police for protecting the People's House. Protesters have a Constitutionally-protected right to be heard, but I urge them to remain peaceful.

Peaceful protest is the right of every American but this attack on our Capitol will not be tolerated and those involved will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

If @senatemajldr and @GOPLeader must look their seditionist in the eyes and end this entire thing now. This is an insurrection. They must lead now. I doubt either of these cowards will do it but it's time to do the right thing for once.

This is a dark day. What’s happening at our US Capitol is appalling. Glad you and your staff are safe @davidcicilline and praying for the safety all of my friends and former colleagues. https://t.co/eomQnKgg5R
