MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — Manhattan Beach officials are looking for volunteers to help with the restoration of the city's coastal dunes on May 17.

The event is part of the city's Dune Restoration Project, which was started in January 2022 by The Bay Foundation to enhance just over a half-mile of back dunes along the coastline from 36th Street to 23rd Street.

The goal of the project is to create a resilient coastline that acts as a natural buffer against sea level rise and coastal erosion, according to city officials. This is done by removing non-native vegetation, planting native vegetation, fencing areas off and installing educational features, such as interpretative signage, according to city officials.

Volunteers should wear closed-toed shoes, bring water and sun protection, city officials said in a statement Monday.
