Pregnant U.S. Citizen Detained By Border Patrol In South Bay Gives Birth: Report
Federal agents arrested the woman in Hawthorne on June 8, accusing her of obstructing an arrest, according to a report by KTLA.
HAWTHORNE, CA — A South Bay woman who was arrested by border patrol agents in Hawthorne earlier this month has given birth and is now speaking out about the traumatic experience she faced while being detained, according to a report by KTLA5.
A video on TikTok shows border patrol agents pushing Cary López Alvarado against a car and arresting her while someone off-camera shouts, "let her go, she's pregnant."
Border agents arrived outside a building in Hawthorne on June 8, where Alvarado was with her boyfriend and cousin, who were doing maintenance work, according to the report.

All three were detained by the agents, with the Department of Homeland Security accusing Alvarado of obstructing agents from accessing a car containing “two Guatemalan illegal aliens” inside, according to the report, which said the South Bay woman and her cousin are both U.S. citizens.
“They had my boyfriend on the ground already, and they had tackled my cousin down…that’s when I was inside the car just banging on the door,” Alvarado told KTLA in a tearful interview. “[I was asking] ‘What are you doing? Why are you guys treating us like this? We didn’t do anything wrong’.”

Four days later, she gave birth. Her boyfriend, meanwhile, remains in custody out of state.
Alvarado and her boyfriend's arrest happened amidst ongoing ICE raids across Southern California, which have sparked a large number of protests. Hundreds have been arrested or detained during the last two weeks in Los Angeles, with many facing charges related to the unrest.
But federal agents have also made national headlines this week for arrests targeting immigration supporters and a Los Angeles man who tried to stand up for a man being detained.
New York City comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander was arrested by ICE at an immigration court on Tuesday as he was trying to accompany a person out of a courtroom.
Videos from reporters and Lander's press secretary show the moment Lander was detained, an agent could be heard telling Lander, “You’re obstructing," as they tried to pull the comptroller away.
"I’m not obstructing, I’m standing right here in the hallway," Lander said as he was being handcuffed.“You don’t have the authority to arrest U.S. citizens asking for a judicial warrant."
Lander was eventually released without charges.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people took to the streets in Pico Rivera on Tuesday to protest the arrest of 20-year-old Adrian Andrew Martinez.

Martinez was standing up for an older man being detained by federal agents when he was arrested, according to a report by CBS.
The interaction was captured on camera by a bystander and shows Martinez in a blue Walmart vest talking with border patrol agents when one of them pushes him.
The bystander, Oscar Preciado, told CBS that Martinez was simply talking with the agents and telling them that they needed a warrant to arrest the man.
The video taken by Preciado shows the federal agents wrestling Martinez to the ground.
"They kept trying to get us back away when they realized there was like 10 of us that were recording," Preciado told CBS. "Some other guys from an unmarked vehicle came out of it with their guns in their hands, pointing at us and everything."
