What's Up: Crazy Socks, Prop 8, Food Trucks in Marina del Rey

Five things to begin your day in Marina del Rey.

Here are five things to start off your Thursday in Marina del Rey:

  1. Los Angeles City Council members – donning eye-catching socks emblazoned with multicolored stripes, polka-dots and superheroes – launched a sock collection drive Wednesday to benefit a downtown homeless shelter and resource center. The socks collected during the Aug. 14-28 drive will go to the Midnight Mission, Councilman Joe Buscaino announced.

  2. More than a month after the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for same-sex weddings to resume in California, the state's highest court Wednesday rejected the last remaining legal challenge to the unions. The state Supreme Court dismissed a last-minute petition by supporters of Proposition 8 – which was approved by California voters in 2008 and banned same-sex marriage – asking that the measure continue to be enforced in the state. The California Supreme Court did not detail the reasons for its decision, simply dismissing the petition.
