1 Person Killed As 2 Cars Collide On Highway 4 In Martinez

A collision between two cars sent both down an embankment where they hit separate trees, the California Highway Patrol said.

MARTINEZ, CA — One driver was killed and another was injured in a two-car crash late Wednesday on state Highway 4 in Martinez.

The collision was reported at 10:40 p.m. on westbound Highway 4, just east of Center Street, according to the California Highway Patrol's Contra Costa Office.

The driver of a gray Honda Civic was traveling westbound and the driver of a white Toyota Corolla was also traveling westbound when the Honda crashed into the Toyota, the CHP said.

The impact caused both cars to lose control and leave the roadway. Both cars traveled down an embankment and crashed into two separate trees, the CHP said.

Emergency personnel performed medical aid but were not able to revive the driver of the Honda, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Toyota was taken to a hospital for treatment of major injuries, the CHP said.

Other than the drivers, there were no other people in either car, according to the CHP.

The Contra Costa County coroner's office was expected to release the Honda driver's identity once their family members were properly notified.

The fatal crash remained under investigation Thursday. Authorities asked anyone who witnessed it or the events leading up to it, to call CHP Contra Costa in Martinez at 925-646-4980.
