A Dry and Lovely Hike
Also, free preschool vision screening, Memorial Day plans, and traditional jazz.

It's THURSDAY, May 26, 2011. America chose its new Idol last night, it's not supposed to rain today, so let's get right into things:
- Weather for the hike last night was gorgeous, and there are still some wildflowers up there to gaze upon. Not many showed up, though. A couple who just moved from Connecticut to Concord, and are looking for a home here, joined hike leader Scott Williams, Alhambra Hills Open Space Committee member Tim Platt, and a few others in scaling Mt. Wanda to see first-hand the property in question. Platt said the next hike will be from Briones, for another view of the Alhambra Highlands property.Â
- Today is the program at Morello Hills Christian Church. Kids 3 to 5 years of age will be invited to have their eyes checked for free, in this program sponsored by the Martinez Lionesses Club.
- Make plans now to attend Monday's Memorial Day services, which begin at 9 a.m. at the Alhambra Cemetery with a prayer, flag raising, the placing of the wreath and a benediction. Then, at 10 a.m., another ceremony will take place at the All Veterans' Monument at the corner of Alhambra Avenue and Berrellesa Avenue. More details to come as the time draws near, but we wanted to let you know to make plans now to join in honoring those who served in the military.
- Doug Stewart, our homeless outreach blogger, tells me that last night was very slow, and nothing much was going on, so there will not be an installment of his popular blog in this morning's Martinez Patch. Meanhwhile, you can still drop off items for the homeless at Noodles for Kids, 725 Main St.
- And if you are in need of some easy, fun music and good times, take a trip to Armando's tonight, where Mal Shape and the Big Money in Jazz Band will take you on a traditional jazz excursion and leave you with a big smile on your face. Showtime is 8 p.m.
