I am so proud to introduce the Rolling Reader! It is the Library’s brand-new, all-electric, early literacy outreach van. The Rolling Reader (which is not a bookmobile) will visit partner organizations in underserved communities like First 5, Head Start, and Monument Crisis Center as well as various family-oriented community events. During the visits, Library staff will present storytimes, hand out new, free books that the children get to keep, as well as crafts, and activities focused on early literacy, small motor skills, and STEM.

The goal of early literacy outreach is to introduce young children to books and reading at an early age. Research shows that creating positive experiences with books sets the stage for a child's success in learning to read. Literacy skills are also a strong predictor of health, employment status, and overall success in life. Our hope is that interaction with Rolling Reader will help to instill a lifelong habit of reading and love for libraries. Even though the Library has 26 branches across the county, there are still many people who don’t have easy access to one, so we are bringing early literacy services to them!

Bella Merrill is the bilingual (Spanish) children’s librarian who travels with the Rolling Reader. She has been with the library for six years and loves sharing books and songs with kids. She aims to show kids and caregivers how fun reading together can be hopes the program will bring more families into the library branches.

This project has been such a joy, full of color and imagination. A dedicated group of staff worked together to come up with the vision for the Rolling Reader and the van’s mascot, Roxy. The Library’s very talented graphic designer, Raphael, brought it all to life. He designed the beautiful wrap and drew many of the elements by hand. Raphael has been with the library for five years and says his favorite part about this project is that people all across the county will get a chance to enjoy it.

Keep your eyes peeled for the Rolling Reader and Roxy and honk or wave if you see them on the road.
