Boy Killed When Train Hits Cars In East Contra Costa County

Four people were hospitalized and a 12-year-old boy died in the Oakley incident.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — A freight train struck three vehicles at a railroad crossing in Oakley on Wednesday, killing a 12-year-old boy and sending four other people to area hospitals.

Police responded at 12:53 p.m. to the railroad crossing at East Cypress Road and Main Street in Oakley, where one vehicle was overturned. Three people were transported via ambulance to area hospitals, while the most seriously injured — a 19-year-old woman with "critical" injuries — was airlifted to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, according to Fire Marshal Steve Aubert with the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District.

"It's just another tragic reminder to obey all traffic signals around railroad crossings," Aubert said.
