City Council Will Consider Sports Complex Tonight

Indoor soccer/baseball complex in the old storage area near the waterfront is up for approval.

The City Council is slated tonight to consider a proposal to operate an indoor sports complex in a warehouse building near the waterfront. The proposal, from Universal Sports Academy (USA) would include an indoor sports field for soccer and baseball, batting cages, and an after-school study area with tutors and computers.Β

City staff is recommending approval of the project, and spending up to $10,000 to develop a lease agreement with USA. The council will also hear a presentation from another sports complex operator, Califoria Sports Complex, which wants to create an indoor basketball/volleyball complex in the other building on the site, which is somewhat smaller. That is also the proposed site of an environmental research center, if money for that project comes through from Prop. 84 funds. A decision on those funds is expected in mid to late April.

The council is also expected to hear from the newly-formed Alhambra Hills Open Space Committee tonight, with a plea to help them find a way to purchase 300 acres of property in the Alhambra Hills and preserve them for open space.
