Flooding Possible In Martinez As Atmospheric River Inundates Area

Heavy rainfall will bring the potential for moderate to rapid rises along area rivers, streams and creeks. Gusty winds are also forecast.

MARTINEZ, CA —The National Weather Service issued a flood watch and a wind advisory for the East Bay from early Wednesday morning until early Thursday morning as an impactful atmospheric river brings heavy rain and gusty winds to the Bay Area.

Periods of moderate to heavy rainfall will bring the potential for moderate to rapid rises along area rivers, streams and creeks across the region.

The majority of the day Wednesday will be rainy, wet, and windy, with 90 percent chance of rain in Martinez during the day and 100 percent chance at night. The East Bay is expected to see around 1.5-2 inches of rain, forecasters said.

Updated rainfall totals for the upcoming storm system Wednesday. A slower initial storm progression has led to increased rainfall totals, most notably over the North Bay. The storm is expected to gradually speed up as it moves through the Bay Area, though heavy rain is still likely across the area. (National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area)

A flood watch means flooding is possible and that residents should monitor local forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings.

"Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop," the weather service said. "Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may be flooded. Storm drains and ditches may become clogged with debris."

Meanwhile, winds of 25-35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result, the weather service said.

A high wind warning is in effect for the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Santa Lucia Mountains. A wind advisory is in effect for the rest of the forecast area including the Bay Area and interior Central Coast including the mountains of San Benito County from 4 a.m. Wednesday to 4 a.m.Thursday.
