Friday the 13th In All Its Glory

Lots of music this weekend, and a spectacular car show on Sunday.

It's FRIDAY, May 13, 2011. That's right, Friday the 13th, typically considered a day of ill luck, and the source of a series of cheesy horror/slasher films in the 1980s. However, this particular day promises to have a lot of spring sun and mild May breezes, so it's hard to imagine anything negative coming out of that combination. May your weekend be spectacular.

  1. Seminal 1980s band are playing in Oakland tonight. With tunes like "I Like the Nightlife, Baby," and "Who's Gonna Drive You Home" running through our heads all day back then, this should be a fun show. And just seeing what these once-skinny guys look like now should be even more fun.
  2. For those who want their music closer to home, there are two shows at this evening: The Happy Hour and a Half, beginning at 4:30 p.m., featuring harmonica virtuoso Danny White and some guitar dude; and at 8 p.m., it's El Desayuno, featuring their blend of Latin funk and jazz.
  3. Tomorrow is the , from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is truly one of the treasures of our city, and worth the effort to keep it looking like the jewel it is. Call (925) 372-3510 for more information on how to volunteer.
  4. Tomorrow night, you may want to take a little jaunt over the bridge and check out our own as they take the stage at Benicia's First Street Cafe. Or, wait until Sunday and catch their show at beginning at 3 p.m. Either way, you can't lose.
  5. Finally, on Sunday it's the 5th annual Les Schwab Car Show, featuring live music, raffles, and oh yes, lots and lots of classic cars. All the proceeds for this event, which is being sponsored by Patch, will go toward the schools in the Martinez Unified School District. So come by and enjoy some automotive coolness, and look for me. I'll be the guy in the green Patch shirt.
