Contra Costa County's gas prices were higher than those of most California counties but were still lower than those of others in the Bay Area, including San Mateo, San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma and Napa counties.

California's gas prices were among the nation's highest, according to AAA.

It's possible that the end of daylight saving time and onset of shorter days could contribute to lower prices, said AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross.

"Drivers may head straight home from work to avoid the darkness rather than tack on side trips for shopping or errands," he said in a statement.
