Jr. High Kids Collect Paper Products For Homeless Shelter

Once again, the students who belong to California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) put their collective energies, intelligence and talents together and came through for the community.

This time, the students went on a two-week paper drive, collecting donations of paper towels, toilet paper, paper plates and other paper goods needed by a local shelter for homeless families. They collected a van load of goods, which were donated on Friday to the shelter.

"We can't express in words how grateful we are to these kids," said a shelter representative on Friday. "They really came through for us." 

(Full disclosure: the CJSF organizer is Martinez Jr. High math teacher Carol Caroompas, who, by some odd coincidence, shares the same last name as the editor of Martinez Patch. By an even odder coincidence, she also shares the same house.) 

"In order to be a CJSF member, you must hold at least a 3.5 GPA in your academic classes," Caroompas said. "CJSF promotes academic excellence and community service.  The paper products drive was held for a Martinez family shelter. The students made posters and presented the project to all MJHS classrooms.  We had a contest for the classroom with the most donations.  Mrs. Dellar's 1st period class was the winner."
