Martinez Set For Mosquito Spraying After West Nile Virus Found

Three chickens from Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District's chicken flock in Martinez tested positive for West Nile virus.

MARTINEZ, CA β€” The Contra Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District will be spraying in an area of Martinez tonight because of a high number of mosquitoes and the recent detection of West Nile virus there. The spraying of insecticide from trucks will take place between dusk and 11 p.m. in an area bordered on the north by the Carquinez Strait, on the south by Waterfront Road and railroad tracks, on the east by Pacheco
Slough and on the west by railroad tracks and Embarcadero Street.

District officials said on Friday that three chickens from the district's sentinel chicken flock in Martinez tested positive for West Nile virus.

The insecticide being sprayed is Zenivex E4 RTU, which will be applied at 1.5 ounces per acre, according to the district.

People are encouraged to report dead birds, which are often a sign of West Nile virus in an area, by calling 877-WNV-BIRD.
