Mom's Talk - Glamor at What Price?

How do we enjoy the glitz and glamor of Hollywood without sending the message to our kids that shallow is more than just fun?

This week's Mom's Talk topic came from a member of our Mom's Council, who was inspired by watching the Oscars. How, she wonders, do we enjoy the rather insubstantial fruits of Hollywood - the dresses, the gossip, the stars and glitz and glitter - without imparting to our kids that this stuff really matters?

It's a fair question, given the schoolyard atmosphere and youngsters who are trying to figure out what really matters in a world filled with MTV reality shows, ads for makeup and clothes, and pressure to be cool. It would seem that a lot of time and money is being spent convincing our kids that shallow things really are important. These are powerful influences, and difficult to counteract.

So how do we impart other, more important values to them, while still enjoying the silly stuff ourselves? It's like leaving a People Magazine lying around, but making sure there is also a copy of Plato's Republic or something in plain sight. How do we do that on a daily basis?
