Oakland Woman Arrested In Fatal I-80 Hit-And-Run Collision

Police say an alleged drunk driver struck a Martinez man standing near his broken-down Corolla on the side of eastbound I-80 near Pinole.

PINOLE - An Oakland woman suspected of a fatal hit-and run collision early Sunday morning along I-80 near Pinole has been arrested.

The California Highway Patrol says 31-year-old Keri Cache was driving a white 2003 Chevrolet Malibu at speeds near 75 mph when her vehicle struck and killed a 28-year-old man from Martinez whose Toyota Corolla had broken down on the side of the road.

The California Highway Patrol says around 12:00 a.m. Sunday, an off-duty Berkeley Police Department officer was following a driver that appeared to be intoxicated in a Chevy Malibu on eastbound I-80, near Pinole Valley Road.

The officer called 911 to report the driver - later identified as Cache - driving erratically. According to the CHP, the officer told dispatchers the Malibu was weaving in the slow lane at 75 mph.

As the off-duty officer continued to follow, authorities say he witnessed the suspect car collide with a disabled Toyota Corolla along the right shoulder of eastbound I-80.

The CHP says the force of the impact sent the driver careening down an embankment alongside the freeway, killing him.

The off-duty officer continued to follow the suspect, giving updates to responding officers, watching the Malibu exit I-80 at Willow Avenue in Rodeo.

According to the CHP, the Chevy drove into a Safeway parking lot, began to do β€œcircles” within the parking lot, and then exited back towards I-80.

Officers say the Malibu ran a red traffic light before getting back on eastbound I-80 towards I-680.

A CHP - Solano unit was able to catch up with the car on eastbound I-80, west of Nut Tree Parkway, and detain it while others offers arrived.

After a DUI investigation, Cache was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested for felony DUI causing the loss of life, felony hit and run causing the loss of life, and misdemeanor driving with a suspended license.

Keri Cache was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility after being medically cleared.

The Contra Costa Division of the CHP is asking anyone who witnessed the collision to call them at 925-646-4980.
