Pilot From Martinez Killed In Concord Plane Crash ID'd

The 69-year-old was the sole person onboard the Cessna that crashed Monday from Buchanan Field Airport.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA – The pilot and sole occupant of a small single-engine plane that crashed near Concord late Monday morning has been identified as 69-year-old Christopher Rampoldt of Martinez, according to the Contra Costa County coroner's office.

The Cessna 152 took off from Buchanan Field Airport around 9:35 a.m., according to spokesman Peter Knudson with the National Transportation Safety Board.

Rampoldt crashed on federal land at Military Ocean Terminal Concord, but it's not clear when that happened.

Nobody witnessed the crash, according to Knudson, until the wreckage was found by a person on the ground
in a debris field estimated to be roughly 150 feet long.

Federal firefighters on base responded to the crash and reported the fatality to the coroner's office, according to Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Marshal Robert Marshall.

NTSB personnel are planning to remove the wreckage of the plane and transport it to a secure location where they can continue to investigate the crash.

Knudson said the agency will release a preliminary accident report in roughly two weeks, but that document probably won't address the cause of the crash.
