Quiet Demonstration For Same Sex Marriage In Martinez Tuesday

A group of about thirty people gathered to show support for overturning Prop. 8.

About thirty people quietly gathered outside of the Contra Costa County Clerk/Recorder’s Office Tuesday to demonstrate their support for same sex marriage, and to support one couple’s attempt to secure a marriage license.

The group, many of whom were from the Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church in Walnut Creek, held signs, sang songs, and formed a circle of support for the two men who were denied a license.

The Valentine’s Day demonstration was sparked by the Feb. 7 ruling of the Ninth District Circuit Court of Appeals overturning Prop. 8. The court kept the ban on same sex marriage in place until backers of the 2008 proposition, which passed by 52 percent of the vote, decide to appeal the decision to a larger panel of the Ninth District court, or take the case directly to the Supreme Court.
