Shelter In Place Warning Lifted For VA Hospital

A shelter-in-place warning for a Veterans Affairs healthcare facility in Martinez has been lifted following an earlier report of a gas leak, according to a Contra Costa County Fire Protection District dispatcher.

The leak was reported at about 3 p.m. at 40 Muir Road. People inside the healthcare facility, which is across the street from where the leak originated, were advised to shelter in place.

The warning was lifted at 4:35 p.m., the dispatcher said, and firefighters left the scene.

No injuries or explosions were reported.
         
PG&E spokeswoman Fiona Chan said PG&E was notified of the leak at
about 3:40 p.m.

When a crew from the utility arrived, they found that a third party contractor working on a vacant building had cut into a one-inch gas
line.

Crews shut off gas to the building and were working to stop the leak, which they expected to have stopped by about 6 p.m., Chan said.
