MARTINEZ, CA — City staff will present a report on usage of the temporary dog park at the John Muir Amphitheater during Tuesday night's City Council meeting. An average of 26 users have signed in to the park per day between February 2018 and February 2019. That number is down slightly from the last update provided in August, however.

The same data indicates that 90 to 95 percent of the park's users are Martinez residents, with non-residents visiting frequently from Crockett, Pacheco, Pittsburg and Pleasant Hill. During the months analyzed, only two dog fights have been recorded. City staff have described the rate of reports of aggressive dogs as "exceptionally low."

City staff say the sign-in sheet they've been using is an imperfect means of tracking data. They have plans to phase it out in the coming months, citing a steady decline in the number of people using it.

After that, city staff will drop by to monitor usage in person.

The temporary dog park was set up as part of a three-year trial period, which started in July 2017. City staff expects to present another update on the trial period this fall.
