MARTINEZ, CA — After a bustling Black Friday, Shop Small Saturday, and Cyber Monday spree, North Bay residents may be feeling shopped out ahead of the holidays. Giving Tuesday arrives just in time to spread cheer elsewhere.

In the North Bay, many nonprofit organizations are requesting assistance — and Giving Tuesday is the perfect opportunity to support them.

Giving Tuesday was dreamed up almost a decade ago to inspire people to look beyond their immediate families and bring joy to other communities.

These days, there are many ways to give. Whether you choose to start a Facebook donations campaign, send your reward points on Amazon to a nonprofit through Amazon Smile, or a direct donation, all forms of donating are appreciated.

This year, 33.1 million participants in the nation signed up to participate on Giving Tuesday. Last year, $2.47 billion was raised in 24 hours on Giving Tuesday.

“We saw a tremendous level of giving in 2020 because of the pandemic, people giving to social issues and other factors,” said Mike Geiger, MBA, CPA, president and CEO of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. "That strong level of giving continued into the first quarter of 2021, and then started to level off."

The global movement was launched 2012 at the Belfer Center for Innovation in New York City.

"It’s difficult to predict how this end-of-year fundraising will compare, but there are reasons to be encouraged," said Woodrow Rosenbaum, chief data officer of GivingTuesday.

This season, the North Bay's Napa Valley Vintners created the #NapaGiveGuide, according to Giving Tuesday's U.S. website. The guide includes 57 different organizations and nonprofits that will be accepting donations on Tuesday and through the holiday season.
