Menlo Park Residents Open To Increased Taxes For Library: Survey

A survey showed 76 percent of people support the idea of improving the library system, and 53 percent support increasing taxes for it.

MENLO PARK, CA -- Would you support increasing taxes to improve Menlo Park's library system? A slight majority of people who took the city's satisfaction survey in 2017 said yes.

The city hired Godbe Research to poll 808 adult residents. Researchers asked the residents various questions including whether they support the idea of improving the city's library system. The survey said 76 percent of respondents support the idea, while 61 percent support the idea of improving the library system through a $50 million bond measure. Fifty-three percent of respondents said the city could improve the library system by increasing utility taxes.

When it came to downtown parking, 46 percent of respondents said they could usually find parking. The drivers were also asked if they support building a parking structure. Fifty percent of people said they support building a 7-story parking structure, 59 percent support building a five-story parking structure, and 75 percent support building a three-story structure.

Overall, 72 percent of respondents said they were satisfied with the overall quality of life in Menlo Park.

The City Council will discuss the survey and set goals for the year at a Jan. 29 meeting. The meeting takes place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Arrillaga Family Recreation Center at 700 Alma Street.
