Officer Killed In The Line Of Duty Remembered In San Mateo County
Only one officer has ever been killed in the line of duty in this town.
MENLO PARK, CA — Every year in Menlo Park, officers recognize Sept. 22 as the anniversary of an officer killed while on the job.
On Monday, Menlo Park Police Department chief, commanders and officers stopped by Jack W. Lyle Park on Middle Avenue to pay tribute and honor their fallen officer with a police radio call by dispatch.

On September 22, 1960, Officer John Lyle was shot and killed by a suspect in a stolen car. He was an eight year veteran and was survived by his wife Norma and their four children who were 2, 4, 6 and 9 years old at the time of his death.

Lyle was the first and only officer ever killed in the line of duty in Menlo Park, police said.

“Officer John Lyle's sacrifice reminds us of all of the courage and dedication required to protect our communities,” police said.
