Stolen Car Tracked By Cameras, Leads To Recovery In San Mateo County: Police

Automatic license plate reading cameras tracked the car heading into the city, police said.

MENLO PARK, CA — Using automatic license plate reading cameras, police were able to locate a stolen car, which led to the arrest of a 42-year-old man Thursday in Menlo Park, police said.

At around 9:15 p.m. on Thursday, Menlo Park Police Department officers said the San Bruno Police Department notified them that a stolen car was heading into the City of Menlo Park and was being tracked by Flock Cameras, which are automatic license plate readers.

Police said they found the car and attempted a traffic stop but the driver, later identified as Anthony Ramos Santos, 42, fled on foot into a residential neighborhood, where he stole a bicycle in an attempt to escape.

Witnesses told police where he was heading, leading officers to find and detain him.

Police said they arrested Santos for possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting a peace officer. Officers said Santos also was a probation stealing other cars.

"The undamaged vehicle was returned to the rightful owner in the same condition it was taken," police said.
