Calif. Death Row Inmate Killed By Another At San Quentin: CDCR

SAN QUENTIN, CA — A California death row inmate is accused of stabbing and killing another at the San Quentin State Prison on Friday, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The CDCR said the inmate, Jonathan Fajardo, 30, was stabbed in the chest and neck with an inmate-made weapon while he was in a yard complex at the prison. Officials say he was pronounced dead around 10:35 p.m.

According to The Los Angeles Times, this is the first such death row slaying in California since 1997.

Fajardo was transferred to the prison from Los Angeles County in May 2011 and was given a death sentence for two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances and seven consecutive life sentences.

Officials say the accused in the attack is 34-year-old death row inmate Luis Rodriguez. He was transferred to the prison in Aug. 2008 to serve a life with parole sentence for first-degree murder. He was sentenced to death in Sept. 2015 while incarcerated for two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances.

The death is being investigated as a homicide by the prison’s Investigative Services Unit and the Marin County District Attorney’s Office has been contacted.
