Library Launches Mt. Tam at Play Exhibit
Collection of photos from history room highlights history of recreation on the mountain and the Mountain Play.
In its ongoing quest to connect Mill Valley's past to its present, the Mill Valley Public Library has unveiled a new photo exhibit focusing on the history and recreational past of Mount Tamalpais. The show, dubbed "Mount Tamalpais at Play," includes 27 historical photos and will run outside the Lucretia Hanson Little History Room through Sept. 1.
The exhibit, curated by Alex Brown, a reference librarian and archives assistant in the history room, draws on the library's extensive and increasingly digitized photo collection.
"I definitely wanted to pick interesting photos and recreational activities that people didn't necessarily think about on Mount. Tam," Brown said, citing a shot of a man canoeing on a lake that no longer exists as an example.

The exhibit also features some highlights of the history of the Mountain Play, which opened in 1913 with a theatrical retelling of the biblical story of Abraham and Isaac.
For its next exhibit in the fall, the library plans to focus on natural disasters in Mill Valley over the years. "Mount Tamalpais at Play" is accessible during library hours, which can be found here.
