Marin Considers Plan To Split Affordable Housing Development

The proposal would move 32 of 74 affordable housing units initially planned for Marin City to a site at Tam Junction.

MARIN COUNTY, CA — The Marin County Board of Supervisors is reviewing a proposal to rebalance a planned affordable housing development to spread the units across two locations.

Citing community feedback, the plan would reduce the number of affordable housing units allotted for 825 Drake Avenue in Marin City, shrinking from 74 to 42, and build the remaining 32 units on a newly acquired property at Tam Junction. A neighboring, county-owned parcel could be utilized for parking, officials said.

The updated proposal adjusts a plan supervisors approved in 2020 to build a multi-wing affordable housing complex in Marin City using prefabricated modular units. The compromise plan would place the larger, five-story wing at Drake Avenue, with the smaller, four-story wing moving to the Tam Junction property at 150 Shoreline Highway.

"The county listened to the community at a number of meetings and worked to find a solution that addressed their concerns," said Stephanie Moulton-Peters, the District 3 Supervisor. "The two-site approach results in less housing on a hillside adjacent to a low-income senior community in Marin City and adds housing in an area already approved for housing on a transit-oriented site with bus lines and other transportation services."

The board will consider a memorandum of understanding for the changes at an Oct. 15 meeting. Initial construction work at the Drake Avenue site could begin as early as the fall.
