Bay Area Housing Development Secures Funding For Revitalization
The housing development is scheduled to start renovations in early 2026.
MARIN COUNTY, CA — Officials from a historic housing complex in Marin County announced Tuesday they have received the necessary funding to start their plans to renovate.
Golden Gate Villages, located in Marin City, has been awarded a reservation of tax credits and bonds from the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee and California Debt Limit Allocation Committee, allowing them to begin phase 1 of their revitalization project planned for early 2026.
“This award marks the beginning of a transformative period for Golden Gate Village. It allows us to move forward with the first phase of revitalization, ensuring our current residents will have comfortable, modern apartments, and Golden Gate Village will continue to be a vibrant community for families for years to come,” said Stephanie Moulton-Peters, Marin County District 3 supervisor and chair of the Marin Housing Authority Board of Commissioners.

Phase 1 of the project focusses on a portion of the property’s historic mid-century low-rise buildings where they plan to upgrade kitchens and bathrooms. They also plan to improve safety and make them more energy efficient while also adding new outdoor spaces.
"This milestone reflects years of work pulling together multiple layers of funding and planning,” said Kimberly Carroll, executive director of the Marin Housing Authority. “It’s a complicated process, and we’re grateful to the residents, our partners, staff and community advocates who have stayed engaged and pushed this project forward."

Marin Housing Authority, the residents of Golden Gate Village and Burbank Housing collaborated to get funding for the project.
“Golden Gate Village is such an important part of Marin City’s history, and we’re honored to be a part of its future,” said Larry Florin, CEO and president at Burbank Housing. “Residents have shared their ideas and hopes for the community for years, and we’re eager to finally get started on the work they have helped shape.”
Burbank Housing and Marin Housing Authority are working with residents like Neil Hammari to prepare for the revitalization of their homes, including temporary relocation and eventual return to newly refurbished residences.
“We’ve been living in Golden Gate Village for 13 years now, and it’s been such a blessing for my family,” Hammari said. “We know we’re going to have to move out for the remodeling because there are a lot of deep repairs needed in the bathrooms and kitchens. But overall, we love this housing situation and look forward to moving back into a home with new countertops and new updates, and to spending many more years here.”
Designed in 1961 by Frank Lloyd Wright protégé Aaron Green, Golden Gate Village was built to house post-WWII workers. This 296-unit community, now on the National Register of Historic Places, provides homes for nearly 300 low-income families.
Burbank Housing, a nonprofit with over 40 years of experience in affordable housing, was chosen by the Marin Housing Authority to revitalize Golden Gate Village. This selection aligns with the Resident Plan's focus on community input, preservation, and affordability.
Since 1942, MHA has been Marin County's public housing agency, offering affordable housing and rental aid to low-income residents. MHA owns and operates Golden Gate Village, manages federal housing programs and public housing developments, and works to preserve and create affordable housing in Marin County.
