Person, Dog Killed In House Fire

The Labor Day fire happened in the pre-dawn hours in Marin County.

MARIN COUNTY — One person and a dog died in a house fire early Monday near Mill Valley, fire officials said.

The blaze was reported at 12:38 a.m. at a home in the 700 block of Alta Vista Road in Tamalpais Valley, an unincorporated area of Marin County.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the front and right side of the home.

They immediately found the victim in a back bedroom, but the person had suffered significant burns and was declared dead at the scene, according to Southern Marin Fire Protection District Chief Christian Tubbs.

The victim's name has not been released.

A dog also perished in the fire, but four other dogs were rescued from the home, Tubbs said.

The blaze was contained within 20 minutes and extinguished by 1:09 a.m.

No other injuries were reported.

The cause is under investigation.
