School Board Expected to OK Sports Field at Edna Maguire 'TBD Area'
Staff recommends the school board sign off on turning the 21,000-square-foot space on the new campus into a sports field, as long as the district doesn't foot the bill.
It's likely the TBD Area on the new Edna Maguire Elementary School campus will be turned into a sports field — as long as the community can come up with an estimated $650,000 to pay for it.
The proposal for the 21,000-square-foot area in the northeastern section of the new, $35 million campus is on the agenda for Thursday's Mill Valley School District meeting, at 5 p.m. at Mill Valley Middle School.
Staff recommends the board sign off on the idea to develop the area as a sports field once the funding, either private or public, becomes available. Meanwhile, developer Overaa Construction will continue as planned by building the parking, curbs, sidewalks and fences around that surround the area.

The move would bring the number of fields at Edna to two, the same number of fields on the old Edna campus. Along with School Board approval, Mill Valley School District staff recommend "that the current limitations on organized sports groups use for Alto Field should also apply to the proposed TBD Field."
District officials have been clear from the beginning that whatever the area's use, it didn't have the funds to pay for it.

Those who intend to use the field - Mill Valley Little League, Mill Valley Soccer Club and Southern Marin Lacrosse - have said they're interested in raising the necessary $500,000 to $650,000 to build it. The three sports programs have seen a steady growth, and need local sports fields to accomodate it, representatives have said.
