Strawberry Man Arrested for Assault in Fairfax

Assault with cane on Meernaa Avenue leads to arrest Wednesday afternoon.

A Strawberry man was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Fairfax on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon with great bodily injury likely after allegedly attacking an elderly man in a dispute.

According to Fairfax Police Sgt. Stuart Baker, 47-year-old Michael Daniel Stone attacked an unidentified man in his 70s with a cane around 3:45 p.m. on Meernaa Avenue near Ivy Lane. Police responded promptly to reports from eye-witnesses of the attack and arrived on the scene as the suspect was fleeing. The elderly man was transported to the hospital for "serious, but non-life-threatening injuries," said Baker.

Because of the relationship between the assailant and victim and in an effort to protect the victim, Baker said he couldn't give details of what prompted the assault. He did note, however, that the two men knew each other and had a prior relationship.

"It was not a random attack," said Baker.

A number of neighbors in the area witnessed the attack and one driver slammed on his brakes in the middle of the street, according to reports, in order to call police. Because the Fairfax police station is close to where the assault happened, officers were able to be on site within minutes.
