Today is Bike to School Day

School officials and bicycling advocates caution drivers to be aware that more students than usual will be on and around local roadways during the morning and afternoon school commutes.

The early morning commute always features plenty of students two-wheeling and walking their way to school. But Wednesday will likely more like a kiddie Tour de France than an average weekday morning.

That's because it's the first-ever National Bike to School Day, with students at each of the 's six schools and .

"It's important that drivers be more aware than ever of the students bicycling and walking to school Wednesday morning," said Michele Kuhns, a parent at and one of the coordinators of the Marin Safe Routes to Schools, which oversees the event in Marin.

Officials from the National Center for Safe Routes to Schools said that more than 700 Bike to School Day events in 49 states and the District of Columbia have registered on the official website.

“We knew there was support for a spring bike to school day, as many local bike-focused events have been held in the past,” said Lauren Marchetti, director of the National Center for Safe Routes to School, which coordinates National Bike to School Day and International Walk to School Day. “But the turnout for this first-time event is spectacular! We couldn’t be more pleased with how many communities and families are coming together to promote biking to school on this one day.”
